What is your business priority in terms of targeting?

At any stage of business, you need to be aware of your marketing options.

But, this does not mean that you should cut yourself too thin and try to cover all basis. For instance, if given the choice between Facebook and Google targeting, your decision should be based on the specifics of your business. In an ideal world, you should have a strong presence on both. But, for most businesses, it is generally not possible. We talk further about this here.

Similarly, in terms of market segmentation, your targets need to involve a certain level of thinking too.

Long Term Thinking

Hopefully, you are in business for the long haul.

This means that, even if you have defined, for instance an age group as a target, you are still preparing for the future. In other words, people who are too young for your business today will be the right age tomorrow. And, if you want to get to them and develop a connection with them, you have to start working towards it now. In other words, you need to think of consumer socialisation – how the generation of today will become your consumers tomorrow.

Example of Consumer Socialisation – Facebook Vs Instagram

The best example I can give you here is Facebook and Instagram.

10 years ago, if you had told me that Facebook will be a hotspot for marketing, I would have laughed you off. This was before our parents, and grandparents, had joined the platform. Facebook was still trying to find its place and was the next big social thing.

In fact, no one had imagined that the most active age group on Facebook, once the young generation has found other platforms, will be the hotbed of marketing targets. Today, the 30 to 45 age group resides on Facebook, being the most active.

But, where are the 18-25s, and even the younger generation?

You are right. They are active on Instagram. And, to a certain degree, Snapchat too. The future of Snapchat is in the air, but Instagram is doing quite well.

Logically speaking, you should start establishing a base on Instagram from now. And, you should do so even if it doesn’t drive sales for now.

Accumulating Following

If nothing else, just keep in mind that by applying the right tactics, it is quite simple to accumulate followers on Instagram currently; the same way it was on Facebook a few years ago.

But, once the platform becomes the living space of the right age group and the competition catches up, you are going to face the same issues of growing a following on Instagram. So, the time to act is now.
