Before you head to your next networking event, it’s a good idea to learn about the different types of people you may come across; so you know better how to interact with them.
Chances are, you’ve probably already come across multiple personalities at networking events but this should never throw you off. Because networking is one of the best ways to meet like-minded people and create valuable relationships: the best ones are the one’s that can help you in the future; so it’s important to make the most out of every opportunity.
Just also remember, if you’ve had a bad experience in the past, it doesn’t mean all networking events are bad. It could just be that particular event wasn’t for you; so always be open minded.
Saying all that, here are 5 types of people you’re most likely to meet at networking events (maybe you’ll fall under one of these too!).
Types of People at Networking Events
The Chatterbox
This person loves to talk. A lot!
In fact, they might not stop talking! The chatterbox will find a way to keep the conversation flowing with any topic.
Normally, networking conversations will naturally come to a close and enable you to gracefully move on to the next. Not with the chatterbox though.
Rather, this person will keep you held hostage and sometimes it can feel quite rude to interrupt them.
However, you should try to take control of the conversation by being assertive and firm. You could say, “Well it was lovely meeting you. Thank you and have a great evening!” for example.
The Stalker
Have you ever felt a pair of eyes on your back constantly? Or see the same face every corner you turn?
Now it could be because of your dashing looks, but whatever it is – this person can’t seem to get enough of you!
Typically, the stalker will be keen to keep any interaction going and may follow you around all evening in hope that they’ll be able to speak with you, and you only, again.
Whilst it can be flattering to know people find you charming, obsession can cause you to quickly disengage – it can be weird, no one wants a stalker.
Unfortunately, with these types of people there’s no beating around the bush. Instead you will need to be frank and advise you want to connect with others, and suggest they should do the same.
The Gossiper
Forever trying to climb the social ranks, the gossiper spreads the word like a wildfire. These are the people you want to be careful with.
Because if someone is happy to dish the dirt out on others, they’ll probably do the same about you too.
As such, if you notice the conversation taking a bad turn, politely remove yourself from the situation; no one wants to be guilty by association.
At the end of the day, someone who talks badly of others is someone who you’ll want to avoid and not associate with your brand.
The Self-Absorbed
Everywhere you go, there will be someone who loves to be the centre of attention and will grab every opportunity to direct the spotlight onto themselves.
The same self-absorbed individuals attend networking events too.
Usually, they’ll have no or very little interest in what you’ve got to say/offer as they are too self-absorbed and focused on their own personal gain.
Of course, the whole point of networking is to meet new people and find people who are the right fit for you. But this needs to be a two-way street.
So, if you come across someone who is only focused on their wins, don’t waste your valuable time stroking their ego. Simply, move on to the next where you’ll be able to actually get a word in edgewise.
The Complainer
It’s normal for things to go wrong from time to time. But this should not be the focus of every single conversation, especially at a networking event.
Unfortunately, the complainer will completely suck the life out of you and you’ll find your mood quickly drops. And, this can affect the way you speak with other people afterwards – you won’t be as enthusiastic.
So, if you’re speaking to someone who finds a hard time seeing the “glass as half full”, you could try to lighten the mood with your great story or find a way to inspire them.
However, if nothing seems to work and all they do is complain, quickly move on to the next person: don’t let nobody drag you down!
The Bottom Line
Now if you think about it, do these types of people seem familiar?
Now you know the types of people that could be at the next networking event, don’t let it catch you off guard. Try to understand these people and find ways you can identify them early on and prepare how you will communicate with them.
We have also made a video where we talk about how networking can sometimes attract the wrong crowd, and more types of people you are likely to meet.
